Through scoring in each inning of the rout, baseball took home an 18-0 shutout against Valley Center, April 20, bringing their winning streak to four games and overall record to 16-4, as well as being placed first in league, 8-1.
Second and third baseman Dylan Morici (10) said that Westview used Valley Center’s unsuccessful plays to their advantage and stayed strong where the other team faltered.
“We definitely capitalized on their errors, and we got more extended innings on that,” Morici said. “I remember one [error] that I scored on, they threw the ball way over the first baseman’s head, and we were able to get two runs on that.”
Offensively, Elijah Whelan (11) had three runs batted in. Jacob Kuy (11) was the leading pitcher throughout the game, pitching for five of the seven innings, not letting Valley Center score at all.
Devin Martinez (11) and Robbie Bezy (12) pitched for the other two, keeping Valley Center at zero.
According to Morici, the team’s offense helped them get ahead and allowed them to consistently score.
“I think we were hitting really well, and [JKuy], the pitcher, was throwing really well, which helped us,” Morici said. “We scored every inning, so the score was steady. We went out really strong [in the game].”
Westview collected a total of 23 hits during the game. Shortstop and pitcher Joseph Arango-Manley (12) said that an overall team effort led to a successful game.
Arango-Manley and Eli Irvine (11) got four hits each and batted back-to-back, as well as having a batting average of 0.800.
“We pitched extremely well and we scored a lot of runs,” Arango-Manley said. Irvine scored four times, Arango-Manley and Jayden Hardy (11) each crossed the plate three times. Arango-Manley said that the team played strong defensively and offensively.
“Defensively, we played an overall very aggressive game,” Arango-Manley said. “Offensively we played great by hitting the ball all over the yard.”
Outfielder and pitcher Charles Jascowiak (11) said that the Wolverines never let up during the game despite their hefty lead, which helped them preserve the shutout.
