How to brew up the perfect college application essay

Sophia Fang, Staff Writer

Are you going to be dressed up as “working on college applications” this Halloween? Have no fear, I have studied every trick-or-treat in the book on how to write the perfect college application essay. If you too would like to write a fa-boo-lous essay, you’re in for a treat! Just follow these three simple tricks.

Creep it real

Essays are the place for you to showcase yourself to admissions officers. By creepin it real, you’ll be able to reveal more personal aspects of yourself and they’ll be under your spell in no time. That’s not to say that you should be revealing the skeletons in your closet any time soon, but carving a genuine portrait of yourself will help admissions officers remember you as one special jack-o’-lantern.

Give ‘em pumpkin to talk about

Bewitch the admission officers with your intellect. The easiest way to do this is by being well-read. Here are some of the most spooktacular reads:

Romeo and Ghoul-iet

The Scare-let Letter

Boo-thello

Sprinkle these titles throughout your essays and you will boo the readers, I can feel it in my bones.

If you’ve got it, haunt it

Writing about your extracurriculars is a great way to give admissions officers a fright. Anything you’ve done, from playing the trom-bone to pipetting potions can become an essay topic.

You will be eerie-sistible. But, be scare-ful not to come off as pretentious by only listing your accomplishments. Crafting a story about overcoming your personal demons will come off as more genuine to the readers.

And that’s it. Now you know how to write a fang-tastic application essay. Good luck to anyone finishing up their college apps this weekend, and I hope my tips come in candy!
