Class presidents for upcoming year announced

In the last few days, the waves of colorful campaign posters that papered the campus have receded. As the school year winds to a close, the ASB class president elections have concluded.

Announced this week, the results were decided after a four-part election process, which included student voting, staff recommendations, interviews, and applications. Candidates were screened for their abilities to lead and communicate with their peers, and for dedication and commitment.

In the freshman class, Cayden Pasion (9) and Lana Pham-Nguyen (9) ran unopposed. Though Pham-Nguyen was previously freshman class president, next year will be Pasion’s first time serving his peers in such a position.

While the results for the new sophomore class presidencies were straightforward, there was significantly more competition.

In the end, next year’s junior class Olivia Kooyman (10) and Amelia Kane (10) beat opponents Kaya Nepomuceno (10) and Katie Ditter (10).

Throughout the campaign process, Kane and Kooyman both pledged to be dedicated and passionate leaders for their class. Kooyman currently serves as sophomore class president, and said she  hopes to carry this experience into her new position.

“My co-president and I had been tasked with planning Winter Formal, but when it was canceled because of rising COVID-19 cases it was a good lesson on how to rise up from challenges and roadblocks,” Kooyman said. “I’ve really learned to expect the unexpected.”

Likewise, four candidates were on the ballot for senior class president elections. Despite a delay in evaluating the final results, Lily Bryan (11) and Lucy Sullivan (11) ultimately came out on top of Lindsay Madigan (11) and Hannah Campos (11). Both presidents-elect have big visions for the coming year.

“Although there’s been some lost time and disconnection with Westview tradition, I see our situation as an amazing opportunity to experiment with creativity,” Bryan said.

Likewise Sullivan said she looks forward to planning as many senior class bonding events as possible with Bryan next year, especially with relaxed COVID-19 worries.

“I’m excited to make the harbor cruise, senior sunrise, Disneyland trip, and everything else incredibly fun,” Sullivan said. “I’m ready to push the limits, as we have not really seen a senior class that has gotten freedom with their activities in the past three years.”
