In a Flash: Making the Cut

Monsèrrat Margritz (12) anxiously navigated the Regis University campus as the wind whipped her face and the snow from the night before crunched underneath her feet, March 19. She left her tour group and followed the sounds of cheers from the nearby stadium.

Peeking over the fence, Margritz made it just in time to watch the first draw as the women’s lacrosse team faced off against Rockhurst U.

As the match heated up, Margritz was nervous. Her hands sweat. Her heart raced. Her eyes darted across the field to follow the ball, as it moved from person to person to goal. They made it seem so effortless. So easy.

When the buzzer rang for halftime, Margritz noticed the head coach pass her on her way to the team room. The coach recognized Margritz from her visit months ago and requested that she come down to the field after the game. For the rest of the game, Margritz bounced her leg in anticipation.

Once the final buzzer echoed in the stands, Margritz made her way to the field. The team was stretching on the midfield circle when the coach walked Margritz onto the turf to introduce her. They pulled her into their post-win moshpit tradition and walked back to the team room.

When the coach invited Margritz to come with them, Margritz was hesitant, scared to intrude.

“Don’t you want to meet your new teammates?” the coach said.

Margritz’ shock faded into gratitude as she cried on the shoulder of her future coach. She had made the team. She was going to play college lacrosse
