When they arrived back from winter break, students and staff were greeted by the D-building’s newly minted black and white paint job, as well as new carpets in a select few buildings, Jan. 6. Other maintenance projects that will happen this year is the reroofing of the buildings and the complete resurfacing of the gym.
Though it may have surprised many, according to Principal Ernie Remillard, the new paint and roof job as well as the plan for the re-carpeting of some classrooms, has been in the works for about three years. The paint and roof projects are a part of the Engineering and Robotics building construction project, and the re-carpeting is an individual project.
Pecoraro, Inc., a subcontractor of Balfour Beatty, is in charge of repainting the buildings, subcontractor Sylvester Roofing is in charge of the re-roofing, and the recarpeting of the classrooms was done by Progressive Flooring. These projects are funded by the Community Facilities District, otherwise known as Fund 49.
Remillard proposed the idea of repainting the buildings to the Facilities, Maintenance & Operation department and PUSD construction manager Sean Jewett, who is the head of the repainting project.
“For painting the buildings, our architect [of the new Engineering and Robotics building] put together a couple of different rendering options that the Facilities, Maintenance & Operations department and administrative staff at Westview narrowed down until the final selections were made,” Jewett said. “This process was completed over the summer of 2024.”
Presented with two custom color combination options by Sherwin Williams, Remillard had to choose between white and black or gold and black, as those were the colors of the Westview logo.
“FM&O and Westview Administration shared the school logo and colors we implemented on past painting projects with Sherwin Williams, and the architect developed renderings of what the colors would look like around campus,” Jewett said.
According to Remillard, though the gold will not be used as one of the primary colors of the buildings, it will be used in accents on the building.
Remillard also had a say in the ratio of white to black on the buildings and worked with the architect to create a balance between the two colors. Currently, the black paint extends from the ground up about 3 feet, the rest of the walls being white. Repainting the buildings black and white with gold accents will be the extent of Pecoraro, Inc.’s work.
“The project itself includes just the black, white, and gold paint, so once the entire campus is complete with these colors, the project will be considered complete,” Jewett said.
Westview is planning to add more painted details on the buildings, such as murals, but the FM&O department will not be involved. These details will be funded by Westview.
Along with the noticeable paint jobs, the re-carpeting has been completed. Only the carpets in the classrooms with water damage have been replaced with a blue-patterned carpet.
“A few years ago, the FM&O department put together a line-item flooring bid so that we could use one flooring contractor for all District flooring,” Jewett said. “The carpet Westview recently received is the standard we’ve implemented due to its competitive price, installation benefits, and popular color design.”
The reroofing of the portable buildings at the back of the campus have also been completed. The rest of campus will be done over non-summer breaks, such as ski week and spring break, and will be finished around August 2025.
Another maintenance project — the complete resurfacing of the gymnasium — will start on June 13 and will be completed in about 3-4 weeks.
“Westview conditions the gym floors annually, but this year, there are things that need to be repaired,” Jewett said. “Western Flooring, the resurfacing company, will add the Westview logo mid-court, redraw the basketball lines, and add badminton lines.”
The gym will be reopened around July 4.
“We plan to complete one more building over each week break, then everything else over summer,” Jewett said.
