The boys 4×110 shuttle hurdle relay team recently captured first place at the Mt. Sac relays, additionally breaking the school record previously held at 1:04.15, something they had already done once previously in the season at the Falcon Relays, March 22 2025.
Luke Yakubisin (12) led as the first leg in the relay team consisting of Ahmad Zahid (12), Max Chen (12), and Omar Shanyour (11).
“At Mt. SAC, we improved [the school record] by another three seconds and improved to become the third fastest shuttle hurdles team in the state,” Yakubisin said. “We all knew [after the race that we had broken the record] because we set it back earlier in the season. It felt really good, especially knowing that we had a really good race. We had been working really hard during the season and during spring break as well.”
With numerous schools from all over the state competing, Mt. SAC is one of the largest high school track meets in California. Westview’s track and field team knew they were facing challenging competition at the 65th Annual Mt. SAC Relays, April 19th, 2025, and they did not disappoint. The boys 4×110 shuttle hurdle relay and girls 4×400 relay teams showcased their best performance yet by shattering multiple school records and placing first and second, respectively.
Not only were the boys shuttle hurdles breaking records, but the girls 4×400 relay team was also busy making history with record-breaking performances.
The relay team of Jordyn Vales (10), Macy Ratermann (12), Delaney Hennigan (11), and Kaitlyn Arciaga (12) won second place at Mt. SAC and set the school record for the third time in their history of running together with a time of 3:55.
“We were in lane nine, which is usually where they put the slowest people,” Vales said. “It’s just going to push us to try and go faster. When [Hennigan] finished and we got second place behind Carlsbad, we looked at our time, and it was really good. All of us were really excited and jumping up and down. We saw our parents and our coaches really happy and we were happy and so excited that we broke it again. We’re friends with the Poway track team and they came over and congratulated us. This is the first time we raced together since last year and we didn’t expect it.”
Vales said her and her teammates have a great balance together as a relay team and that they have many goals to look forward to in the season, one of them being states.
“Our time is eligible for states, but we have to get that time in CIFs,” Vales said. “If we get that time, we can go to states and I’m really hoping we can. I think our [relay] team is motivated to keep setting records and try to do better than what we did before. I just like trying to keep improving and being with my team.”
The girls relay team has been consistently performing at a high level since last year, first breaking the school record at the Mt. Carmel Sundevil Invitational, with a time of 3:58.
“It was very unexpected because it was one of the first meets I’ve gotten put into the 4×400 group and we didn’t expect to break any records,” Vales said. “Especially because we barely knew each other and it was really unexpected to have such a big connection, especially with running.”
Reflecting on her time in track and field, Vales expresses her appreciation for the support and community she has around her.
“Going into high school I didn’t expect to join track and field because I was just thinking of playing soccer,” Vales said. “It was very easy to make a lot of friends and become close with each other, especially with the support of the coaches and the enjoyment of competing together. Track and field has become a big part of my highschool experience and I hope to continue and grow.”
