Gymnastics wins meet on Senior Night

The gymnastics team beat Torrey Pines with 216.55 points on their senior night, April 24. Prior to the meet, Kaya Nepomuceno (12) expected a lot from her bars performance.

“Practice before the meet has been good,” Nepomuceno said. “I mostly did bar routines in order to get in some practice before the meet.”

The team said that they have been working hard to remain undefeated this season, despite losing six valuable seniors last year.  Many players including Eva Fortenberry (9) had high expectations for themselves and from their teammates.

“I think Eva (Fortenberry) did the best because her scores are always high and she always has a good attitude,” Nepomuceno said.

In preparation for the meet, Fortenberry practiced  perfecting each part of her routine to boost the team’s score and try to PR.

“I go to practice almost every day of the week and work on my routines to practice for the upcoming meets,” Fortenberry said. “I always push myself to do the best routines I can at each meet.”

All around, Fortenberry and Nepomuceno both performed the best out of the whole team, scoring 37 points each. Nepomuceno performed best on bars while Fortenberry performed best on the floor. She scored the most points overall with 9.5 in bars using a mix of swings and spins to sway the judges. These scores helped them win in such a close meet, 116 to 110, to keep their undefeated streak afloat. The team was nervous yet confident because Torrey Pines is a very good team.

This year, many gymnasts said there has been a lot of pressure from fans and players but also from their coaches. After winning the last two straight years, they have high expectations to win the league and CIFS.

Nepomuceno led the team to victory with a PR score of 9.75 last year by winning bars overall which was only .25 points better than her score on bars against Torrey Pines.. Despite losing many seniors over the past 2 years, the team has been able to win CIFS. Nepomuceno said she has used the pressure as fuel to continue to win and make her teammates better every day.
