Castelloe twins strengthen bonds as siblings, teammates

According to the Castelloes, their trust in each other to follow through with passes helped them earn points and play well in games.
“I think most of the time, it is just trust that we rely on,” Olivia said. “We trust that the other will get the puck or that the other will be in the right position for the pass. Sometimes, we actually call out to each other, but that doesn’t happen as often because we are pretty soft spoken.”
Olivia and Jessie started playing roller hockey when they were 4, and later took up ice hockey when they were 9. Since then, they’ve played competitively for both sports, being introduced to competitive hockey when they played for the Jr. Gulls for ice hockey from 5th to 6th grade.
As they have played these sports together for most of their lives, they’ve come to an understanding with each other on the rink. Along with that, they developed their own skills and gained a better sense of each other’s gameplay, their strengths and weaknesses, and their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses.
“I believe this led our playing style to become centered around team-play as we used our strengths, such as a good sense of the game and awareness of others on the rink, to allow our teammates to use their strengths,” Jessie said.
Olivia said that playing alongside one another is easier than with other teammates because they are able to anticipate each other’s actions.
Having experience in most of the positions, both sisters mainly stick to the forward position with a few exceptions.
This season, both Jessie and Olivia hope to improve in their technical skills of skating and shooting, in order to perform their best for their last high school season.
“I hope to build up my stamina more, because I didn’t [practice] over the summer,” Jessie said. “Also, [I want] to get better at shots, because they’re one of my weaker points.”
Similarly, Olivia wants to improve on her skills and bond with her team.
“I would like to work on skating and shooting,” Olivia said. “Also, getting to know the team better and work better with them. I think the best way for me to get to know my teammates better is by playing with them.I hope to get to know them a little better on the rink so that we can work together more as a team.”
Even with this specific focus on team gameplay, their strongest relationship is with each other.
“[Hockey is] something that we have shared in common for a long time,” Olivia said. “I definitely think it has helped us understand each other better because we talk about things regarding hockey that may also apply to our everyday lives. It gives us an outlet to communicate with each other. We definitely got to spend more time with each other due to hockey, especially when we were playing like five days a week. We have a younger brother who doesn’t play hockey as much as we do. I find that I don’t see him as often or get to spend time with him as often.I think that if Jessie and I had chosen different sports, it would have been like that.”
