Dear freshman Sophia,
I am here, days away from graduating high school, because of you. Contrary to what you may expect, I carry a lot of love for you. It’s easy to pass off younger versions of yourself as naive or embarrassing. Though I admit you do possess some of those qualities, you also exude an unapologetic radiance and strong will that I admire. I love your eagerness to fill your life with laughter and your courage to be true to yourself. And though you don’t necessarily know what you want in life yet, you are actively seeking out your passions. For that, you continue to be an inspiration to me today.
I hope you take comfort in knowing that there is nothing that I regret in our four years of high school: no choice, no change of direction, no risk. I know the fear of making the wrong decision now holds you back, but trust in yourself and embrace the unknown.
Though I am older, I am still you. We still love pasta and hedgehogs. We still cry when we read the epilogue of “The Mockingjay.” We still share the same eyes that see the world, the same hands that create, and the same bright smile we had as a little kid.
I think you would be proud of the person we grew to be, and I am proud of you. One final reminder: you don’t have to worry about me. Focus on yourself and what you need in the present moment. The future can wait. This is your life; hold onto it tight.
Always and forever,
Sophia
