After a two-and-a-half-year journey, Young Royals has come to a conclusion with its third and final season. Full of emotional turmoil, a scandalous love affair, and suspenseful political tension, the six-episode release follows Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) and Simon (Omar Rudberg) as they struggle to balance their profound love for one another with societal expectations and criticism.
Once again, Ryding and Rudberg do an impeccable job expressing the complex emotions of their characters as they are tested by traumatic family secrets, threats of their boarding school Hillerska’s shutdown, and frenemies with mysterious motives. The supporting characters equally drew me with each of their compelling endings. August (Malte Gårdinger) has been quite the controversial nemesis, however, season three reveals a convoluted story and the impactful arc he deserves.
The romantic and dreamy scenes of the prestigious private school and the royal family’s home in contrast with Simon’s hometown emphasize the characters’ different perspectives and make it an incredibly aesthetically pleasing show. I have always been an avid critic of how youth is portrayed in the media, but the skilled editing of Young Royals’ texts and conversations between the teens is natural and quality. To sum up my feelings toward this season: “I like you and that’s not fake.”
