Released on Sept. 15, Mitski’s seventh studio album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, explores the concepts of love, loneliness, and much more over the course of 11 songs. Wrapping each message in powerful lyrics laced with metaphors, like the extended metaphor of “When Memories Snow,” Mitski’s raw vocals carry emotional melodies to the listener. Her singing is pure yet heavy with sentiment, and this album brings incredible depth and complexity to a range of human emotions.
Though many of the new songs are a quiet repose from her previous albums, her lyrics are packed with emotional devastation. Her lyrical genius carries both the divine love heard in “Heaven” and the swift punch to the gut in “I’m Your Man.” Mitski doesn’t rely on just her lyricism to convey her ideas; she chooses instrumentals that augment her message, like with the violent crescendo of drums in “The Deal,” drowning out her voice to express her suffering.
The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We outlines the multifaceted qualities of humanity. The tracks traverse the emotional spectrum, covering everything from self-hatred and chaos in “I Don’t Like My Mind” to self-love and recovery in “I Love Me After You.”
Every day, I have a new favorite song from the album. It’s impossible to choose just one to love because they all hit home in unique and wonderful ways.
