On Jan. 15, I walked into the movie theater not expecting much out of Night Swim because it had been a while since a horror movie lived up to my expectations of being truly terrifying. By the time I walked out of that theater, I had laughed at small parts, cried so hard I couldn’t see, and, by the look on my face, you would’ve thought I was having a heart attack.
Night Swim is a horror movie that features Wyatt Russell. His incredible acting performance kept the audience on their toes the entire movie. He plays a husband who is dealing with a life changing injury that ended his professional baseball career. He moves into a new house along with his wife (Kerry Condon) and two kids, and they soon discover something unsettlingly wrong with the pool. After signing the lease on the house they family heard strange noises and started having visions that were connected to the pool. Through the use of jumpscares and a creepy concept, Night Swim kept me on edge of my seat yet invested in what was happening. The scary visuals of the creatures lurking in the pool mixed in with the wholesome family moments where Wyatt Russell’s character went through the process of moving on from his old life so he could start a new one with his family. The different emotions presented by the characters showcased the talent of the actors and kept me guessing on what was to come next. Before watching, I had my doubts that such a simple concept could possibly scare me that badly, but it ended up being a truly terrifying film that tugged on all of my emotions, especially fear.
