Considering that it had been nearly five years since the Japanese band Lamp produced an album, I couldn’t contain my excitement when they released “Dusk to Dawn,” Oct. 10. I’m happy to say that the wait was worth it.
In their typical “misty gray vibe” fashion, Lamp truly walks their listeners through a day from “Dusk to Dawn” in just an hour and 14 minutes.
From the titles, vibes, and even the order of the tracklist, everything about this album feels extremely intentional, giving the listeners a premium listening experience with mellow beats and calming tunes. Their first track, “Dusk” conveys the feeling of a calm, misty night that made me feel like I was in some sort of 1970s pixelated film.
Throughout the album, it feels like Lamp is walking with me hand-in-hand, guiding me through the highs and lows of the day with upbeat songs like “August Calendar” with peppier instrumentals and more downbeat ones like “Alone in My Room” that had more monotone melodies.
Ending the album with the hopeful, almost ethereal-sounding track, “Dawn,” Lamp ends their 20-song progression on a positive note. While listening to the final track, I could almost picture myself sitting on a hill, watching the sun rise above the horizon amidst a sea of fog. What a way to close off an album. I love Lamp.
